The International Congress of Educating Cities<\/strong>, which will be held in Granollers from May 26 to 29, will feature John A. Powell<\/a> (written in lowercase at the request of the speaker himself). It is expected that the American, a world leader in the study of racism<\/strong> and discrimination, give a conference during the Congress<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

John A. Powell is teacher and activist<\/strong> recognized in civil rights and liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty and democracy. He is currently the director of the Institute of Otherness and Belonging at the University of California<\/a>, at Berkeley, where he also teaches Law and African American Studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Powell is known for his theory of Otherness, which describes the process of marginalization of social groups. He argues that this phenomenon is one of the main causes of structural racism<\/strong> and social inequality, and that to overcome this it is essential to create a shared belonging where everyone feels included and valued.<\/span><\/p>\n

Powell believes that a just society can only exist when people of all races, ethnicities, and social backgrounds feel accepted and included in the community. This concept of belonging is not only about social inclusion, but also about the need for respect and celebrate differences<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to his academic work, he has worked as an international consultant, collaborating with governments around the world<\/strong> and global organizations. His best-known work, <\/span>Racing to Justice<\/span><\/i><\/a>, explores how to transform conceptions of identity and the other to create a more inclusive society.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from the conferences and expert dialogues, the Congress<\/strong> will also feature the presentation of educational experiences from around the world. In fact, 185 have already been received<\/a>. Specifically, these proposals have arrived from 95 cities, from 16 countries, with the aim of being selected to be presented at the Congress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 18th International Congress of Educating Cities<\/strong>, which will be held in Granollers, will revolve around three axes: the creation of community, the promotion of critical thinking and creativity. The organization has a Scientific Committee that has designed the theoretical framework and contents of the Congress.
